With rolling billing, storage is charged each day based on the space you actually occupy that day, rather than a fixed monthly rental. For example, if you have 2 pallets in the warehouse today you are billed for 2 pallets; if one ships out tomorrow, you are billed for 1. This model relies on a solid warehouse management system (WMS) to track daily usage, and it is common among 3PL providers with good IT support. It means you only pay for what you use, which is more cost-effective for businesses with changing inventory levels.

The warehouse management system identifies every SKU by its barcode at each step — receiving, put-away, picking and shipping. Scanning is what keeps the right item and the right quantity matched to the right order, in the same way a convenience-store cashier scans every item at checkout. Almost all retail products already carry an international barcode (EAN/GS1). Each distinct product or variant needs its own unique barcode; the same code must not be shared between different items, otherwise the system cannot tell them apart and mis-picks become likely.

There is no restriction on what the barcode contains — you can either apply for an international barcode (EAN/GS1) or use your own internal code. There are two ways to handle it:

1. You apply the barcodes before sending goods in. Print and stick a barcode label on each item so the goods arrive scan-ready.
